GameSpot provide the first The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning video. With a length of 1m35s the gameplay video shows Spyro fighting various different enemies using his melee and breath attacks.

Seen throughout the video is a light following Spyro from a short distance away, so although Sparx isn't the health meter in the game he still appears to be following Spyro around nevertheless. And near the end you also see Spyro flying, apparently being chased as he dodges missiles flying past him. The chaser is unseen but it's likely to be Cynder as mentioned in the pre-show previews.

That was nuts!!! so much running around. the sound effect for spyro hitting the enemy is a little annoying, but the game's still in production. graphix look alright, but they aren't as sharp as they will b once the game is finalized, so spyro doesn't look that clear when he's jumping around.

i loved it when spyro floated and made fire and lightning shoot up from under him and turn everywhere into a flaming pit. HEEHEE!

on a side note, spyro still looks ugly in the game play. why can't he be a cute baby? i mean, look at old spyro smilie. who could resist pinching those cheeks! he used to b so cute!

OMG! That was the most action I've seen Spyro in on a console since....since.... well, NEVER! My expectations for this game have just gone up by a million! The enemies look fantastic and they appear to actually have intelligent AI! Spyro's swirling, colorful, attacks look amazing and more deadly than ever before! I mean, did you see how he shattered that enemy's armor then totally demolish him in a huge flame attack! THAT WAS SO COOL! The darker environments look great, and really make Spyro's colorful attacks stand out. Last, the Stone Golem looks even better in the game than he did in the concept art! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK KROME! I only hope the music, voice talent, story, and gameplay controls are as good as the fighting. We might just be looking at PS2's first truly magnificant, Spyro game.

I only got to see it twice because they would show the rest of Sierras games so it played like every 15 minutes or so, but it was awesome! It started off showing some kinda dark castle with dark clouds and lightning flashing everywhere. It was hard to hear so I might be wrong, but I think it was Gary Oldman talking and he says something like "Did you hear that" and Elijah says "hear what" and than gary says "perhaps we should turn back". then it showed a dark dragon flying threw the swirling clouds (i think this was Cynder). The Spyro and Sparx are looking out over some cliff and elijah said something, but I can't remember. Then it shows Spyro looking at this massive Dragon statue thatlooked awesome by the way. Gary same something about standing up to danger and then it shows a bunch of Spyro kicking butt!!! It also showed Cynder again at some point screeching and he looks awesome!!! He's this black and purple dragon with razors on him. Oh, and there's a part where like a movie announcer voice introduces all of the characters, so it says "Elijah Wood, David Spade and Gary Oldman". At the end, Spyro does looks at the camera and does some crazy Flame attack that covers the entire screen. That's all I can remeber...sorry smilie

WOW! That sounds awesome fearthehorns. Thanx for responding. I remember the game booklet for Spyro 1 had a picture of Sparx with arms. It's about time they showed him like this in the game. So.... Cynder is purple and black eh? Sounds kinda like the dragon from Disney's Sleeping Beauty (I really hope not) . Theres a good chance vivendi will post this trailer on their site soon. They posted one for AHT after that year's E3.

Oh yeah, and I'm pretty sure that Cynder is a she not a he.

Thanx again!

Ignitus was Red and stood on all four legs like a traditional dragon instead of on two legs like the Elders from the previous Spyro games. Michael - I think he is making a very wrong assumption, of course it is a part of the canon, every site about it is plastered with the words "prequel" "back-story" "story of origins" - - - , meaning it is a part of the canon not apart from the canon, it happens before 'STD' and most certainly is a part of the series, it simply will be awkward because of the fact it contains Spyro having a lot of powers he never has later on, but many games do this. Look at Mario, Crash, Sonic - all those franchises have games like this that just don't fit in but ARE canon. Plus he has had to re-gain his powers every game, even Insomniac did this when he had to re-learn swimming, wall climb etc. Plus he has lost breaths before - like losing bubble breath. Most long running franchises, (this will be Spyro's 14th game,) have this problem - they create new powers in prequels, sequels, and interquels that the character does not have later on. ih8u2's other reason for saying this may be that the other games were labeled as "Spyro:_______________" and this one is "The Legend of Spyro:_____________", noting a possible difference in style. I wouldn't believe it until VUG says something along those lines.

dark52- Oh, when I saw the two on IGN they looked different than the longer video at gamespot, not only do they have things taken out - but I'm not sure, it seems as if there are some new things too - like Spyro breaking into a room of baboons...

Neal, he didn't have to relearn swimming and the other skills in Year of the Dragon, he knew them right away. And bubble breath was completely useless outside of Enter the Dragonfly so he might still know it but just never use it. Though of course he did forget Ice Breath and Electric Breath but you can blame that on Dark Gems. smilie smilie

Also, I checked, there is nothing extra in the IGN videos.

He didn't? Hmmm...sorry, I must be going crazy! Did he have to re-learn ANYTHING? I swear something had to be re-learned, unless I am totally out of it. My point was mainly many games have characters use skills in one game but then never again, or have to re-learn/ be re-taught them later...Spyro is no exception. Okay, the baboon room scene at IGN seemed new but I guess not then.

It is called "A New Beginning" and features new moves and characters, but it isn't out of Canon, it is called that because they are trying to make Spyro popular again, so this game features an entirely different mechanic for gameplay than the other Spyro games to try to do that, so it is a new beginning, but isn't out of canon.

On an unrelated note, I found this page with a cool 'AHT' banner and a trailer for the game I've never seen before:

http://www.xbox.com/locpages/games/DefaultProductDetail.aspx?p=743&culture=en-US

...and the game is coming to mobile phones, but I'm sure you knew that. This is the most systems a single Spyro game will cros > 6 systems! The previous most was 3!

This is what I read that made me think the new beginning was a different thing than the rest of the series. Wut do ya'll think?-

*As the subtitle implies, the game is all about starting from scratch and revamping the series into a recognizable, yet all together different, beast. For starters, the previous Spyro games are being treated as unrelated to A New Beginning, and consequently any new story elements are fair game.*

evidently, vu hasn't said for sure yet.

The levels in the video look really cool. I still wonder exactly how are the levels layed out in this game? Since gamespot said it has seven environments, it could be one huge open ended world with seven areas. Or it could be like AHT only with seven worlds rather than four. I just hope it isn't like ETD.

#36 Michael 15:56:12 22/05/2006

By saying like ETD, do you mean having one world, eight levels and three boss fights which are just battling Ripto at three different times during the game, each been in the same arena with just one new round added to make it harder than the last or do you, by saying like ETD, mean a bad game?

*In response to Michael*

I mean that since the developers only have seven environments, I hope they don't stick them all in one homeworld with five lousy boss fights like in ETD. I hate to say it, but ETD was THE WORST PLATFORMER I'VE EVER PLAYED!!
I hope Krome takes direction from newer games *like Jak3* and make the game more open ended.

I honestly don't know what to think about the new game. I think it is going to be a nice change but unfortunately, the franchise still looks the same. The new game looks more action packed then its predecessors but I still can't bring myself to be excited about it. Which is surprising considering the fact I am writting a fanfiction series on Fanfiction.net based on this franchise. I was hoping that this game would take the franchise forward by bring a more mature edge to Spyro and his friends. What's wrong VU? Is it that difficult to do a decent mature Spyro game with a good story that allows Spyro and the rest of his friends to be fleshed out into more complete individuals? Never mind, sorry I even asked that question. So VU is going to go backwards in time and try and revise, revamp and reimagine Spyro's origin story. *sigh* The fact that this game is suppose to be a prequel worries me for some reason. I really think that this game is the start of a new cannon for Spyro. Many of you like the new look of this game I for one hope that the storyline is done well. Krome as this game maker or is it Sierra Entertainment... blast! I hate the way VU keeps shopping Spyro around like a orphan. I wish they would just stick with one development team and not the dozens they have used so far.

I am happy they are getting some Hollywood talent to do the voices of Spyro and the new characters but I still feel like VU is making the wrong changes to this franchise and making to many mistakes. I know many of you will disagree with me but think about it. The Spyro franchise has been 'running in place' storywise since the original trilogy of games that introduced the world to the little guy. Wouldn't most of you like to play a more grown up Spyro game that managed to balance out the best of the old gameplay elements and mix in some new elements that make things come alive again.

I want the new game to do well but I also realize that VU doesn't really know what they are doing when it comes to Spyro. I am not asking for perfection but I would like them to at least CARE about Spyro and his friends and do a proper story that takes the best elements of the past games and mix them with fresh new ideas that stay within story continuity and allows Spyro to tackle new challenges. How about a new Spyro game storyline that spans three games and uses a duel storyline formula. Throw in some new complex villians that are actually threatening and intelligent for change. Take Spyro and his friends to new locations or realms that have never been seen before. Introduce some new charaters and for once let them ALL play a part in the story. And no I am not talking about A Hero's Tale either. Do a rpgish type game with all the characters or at least make the gameplay deep enough to involve all the characters. I would like to play a Spyro game for once that begins and ends with some actual character development. Let's face it people no matter how good the new game sounds does it really live up to Spyro game you truly want.

Considering the amount money that VU is spending on this game I really think they should have considered taking Spyro forward and letting him finally break out of the stagnant mold they have him lock into. Instead they decide to take trip down their version of Spyro's memory lane. Hell, they could of at least brought in some of Spyro's original creators to put in their two cents storywise. I for one will play the new game but as of now I don't really like what VU are doing. Maybe I care too much about this character... I don't know but as a storyteller and writer I know this isn't the path or direction I would have taken if I was the one doing the story. Oh well, unfortunately, I am not the one doing it. Still it does look like it is going to be good game. I wish them luck with it.

*sigh* its unfortunate, but i think this series really does have to change, jamieque. either that or end it. if only i could command vu's actions, but they do what they like without listening to fans. I do like the new gameplay direction they've taken with the game, making it more actiony while still maintaining the platforming and flying, but it sounds like they're trying to make their own franchise spinoff of spyro canon. i'm worried that the next games they make, if any, will sequel this one and slowly erase the spyro trilogy's story. neway, this is the last spyro i'll ever play, most likely, so it better be the best one yet.

jamieque, we probably shouln't judge the story until we've played it right? You mention that you want a deeper story, well maybe that's what Krome and VU are trying to do. One of the articles I read said they are trying to make this game more cinematic and I believe the quote said "...like playing through a Pixar movie". From seeing the E3 trailer, this seems like it may be true. Also, I'm sure Gary Oldman and Elijah Wood wouldn't have signed on if the story was crap. All I'm saying is lets not rush to judgments on a game we haven't played and a story we know very little about.

My latest "Nintendo Power" magazine had an article for 'TLOS:ANB' with some new information! They spelt Spyro wrong in some places, said he was raised by fireflies (which we know to be wrong, he was raised by dragonflies) and they spelt the new villainess 'Cinder' but it is 'Cynder', however.

Here is the word-for-word article which I typed up myself, followed by a link for the scan of the article.

>>>
Upper left hand corner picture caption 1 [the black box]: Fire and ice make steam in Spryo’s latest. (they made the spelling mistakes not me)

Upper left hand corner picture caption 2 [the blue box]: A WHOLE LOT OF HOT AIR

The Article:

Spyro Reborn

Don’t let the cute, purple package fool you. Spryo is a fire-breathing powerhouse in a new telling of his origin story.

With fury attacks, upgradable breath, and ground-to-aerial melee combos, Vivendi Universal’s Spyro the Dragon will be tearing through beasts like never before in October release The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning for the GCN, DS, and GBA. Though he was raised by fireflies, the hero proves that he’s all dragon while blazing his way through seven natural environments and three epic air battles. With every scuffle, the hero gains strength and abilities that include elemental (Earth, Fire, Ice, and Electricity) blasts that he uses to diffuse boss monsters: the Cinder Commander, Ice King, Energy Snake, and more brilliant baddies. The game’s three variations follow a similar story, with a few differences. Though puzzle-solving plays a part in all versions, in the DS game players use a touch interface to manipulate objects, such as prisms and mirrors, to solve puzzles. Flying also plays a bigger part in the DS game, with Spyro taking to the air for level-ending fights.
If the Spyro series seems long in the tooth, A New Beginning may be just what it needs to reignite fans’ interest.

Caption to the immediate right of Spyro’s Picture: Training his steely gaze on a long line of enemies, Spyro is ready to take on the world.
