Play Magazine has given the first review of The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning and it's a positive one, awarding it a score of 8.5/10.

Quote: Play Magazine
Graphically the game is as gorgeous as it can be and rich with fine details like little pads of earth that fly up from Spyro's claws, shallow mist, hand-drawn effects on water, sparking snow, reflective surfaces, and real-time lighting you'll want to write home to mom about.

Thanks to GnastyRatchet you can see scans of both Page 1 and Page 2 of the review which includes a couple of screenshots and a large picture of Ignitus.

Look at Ignitus' tail. The tip looks like a sword of some kind(makes me hope that he might be a playable character, as a hidden character or such).

Well, at least Ignitus looks awesome smilie;. I am looking forward to renting this game, because while it does indeed look fun to play, I'm having some reservations about the story. It just doesn't look/feel "Spyro-ish" to me. I hope to be proven wrong.

NICE! thanks. Nothing negative so far, I'm really bracing for the harsh hateful reviews that they unleash once the game's released. I'm thinking along the lines of ETD, with all its positive previews. But hopefully, this game is actually good.

Basically, the land of the Dragons is under siege, and there's only time for one of the dragon eggs to be saved. That egg happens to be Spyro’s and, in true Moses style, is sent down a river.

That's my favorite line right there.

However, things were quite easy, with the enemies often dropping generous health and magic power-ups, and with Sprax always on hand to show which way to go.

Quite easy? Now i'm worried.
Speaking of new games, this is a bit off topic

also on the new xbox

Nice find. At least they are excited about the game and are actual fans. Not like Enter the Dragonfly, where they just threw together bits and pieces of the other Spyro games and called it 'done'.

Is this game even coming out on the tenth? I mean some sites say the 10th, others the 12th, some said the 1st, some say Fall 2006 others say Q4 2006, some say the 13th and 20th...when is it! It is a little more than a day away and the site isn't updated, there has been no major new news for a week...there has been only one (possibly two) reviews...no TV ads, magazine spreads, internet pop-ups or an official site. Where is this game, is it coming out on the tenth or not? With 1 day, 12 hours, 40 minutes and 4 seconds until Tuesday, October 10, 2006 to go where I live shouldn't there be a little more hype or media surrounding it?!?! I'm having an odd feeling about it...

At Gamefaqs someone found the Prima Strategy Guide at GameStop today.
It was only $9.99 minus 20% since I reserved the game. It ended up costing $7.99...not too bad.

The guide is different than most guides you see these days. Instead of being magazine size it's like a paperback book...full color and around 250 pages.

SPOILERS

Levels:
- The Swamp
- Dante's Freezer (snow level)
- Tall Plains
- Munitions Forge
- Concurrent Skies
- Convexity

All of the different breath attacks (Fire, Electric, Ice, Earth) have two variations...and all variations have four levels, so you'll be upgrading these attacks as you progress. You pay for upgrades with Blue Gems

Each new area starts with a training level.

Here's a picture from the guide:

Look Nintendo Power rated it poorly.

What do Nintendo Power know about reviewing games, they were once only a games strategy magazine made by Nintendo. As much as I hate Play, at least they are unbiased(well, compared to Nintendo Power anyway). The only reason I can think of that they gave ANB that score is because that ANB, a sequel to a game that appeared only on the Playstation, is superior to any game of the Mario series, Nintendo's flagship series, a series which Nintendo Power has always praised, no matter how bad a game is. Thus, they gave ANB 55% just to make Mario(or any other Nintendo only game or series for that matter) look good.

Hmm... they mention repetitive, overly-simplistic combat and levels that drag on and on without enough variety to keep things interesting. However they like the soundtrack, the flying levels (though few and far between) and Elijah's voice acting.
