Story
As a direct sequel the story picks up shortly after the events of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. The very basic premise of the game as told by a press release:
Players will resume their role as a powerful Portal Master, who controls their a team of Skylanders, including Giants, mythical and powerful heroes that play a pivotal role in the quest to save the Skylands from Kaos, who is back with another plan to rule over Skylands. Players will navigate perilous lands, battle powerful enemies, collect treasures and solve interesting puzzles.
Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow have returned to help write the story.
Characters
As well as being able to use all of the Skylanders from the original game, Skylanders Giants introduced 16 brand new characters to play as. This new lineup was made up of eight regular sized Skylanders and eight Giants who were about twice the size of the other characters.

Along with the brand new Skylanders and variants there will also be new "Series 2" poses for 24 characters from the first game (compared to the original characters they have a special "Wow Pow" upgrade and the ability to switch paths at will - you can use these toys in the first game but you won't have access to that extra power there) and eight LightCore characters (versions of characters who light up when placed on the portal and cause a massive in-game explosion of light when they first enter) who are made up of four of the new Skylanders and four of the old (they are not Series 2 so do not have a Wow Pow - you can also use these toys in the first game but again do not have any sort of extra power).
Altogether that brings the total number of new toys to 62. Combine that with the 37 playable toys from Skylanders Spyro's Adventure and you have a grand total of 99 different playable Skylander toys.
In the Starter Pack you get three Skylanders (on console Jet-Vac, Cynder (Series 2) and Tree Rex, on 3DS Punch Pop Fizz, Cynder (Series 2) and Tree Rex), a Portal of Power, Trading Cards, a Poster, and the game. The Starter Pack was also available without the Portal of Power for those who already had one but it only had one Skylander: Tree Rex.
To help differentiate between the old and new sets, the base of the Skylanders for Skylanders: Giants are orange instead of the green that is seen on the bottom of the Spyro's Adventure toys.

All toys were compatible with the online world of Skylanders: Universe but it is no longer running.
Portal of Power
Once again the game uses a Portal of Power, the technology inside has not changed so you can still use the portal that you got with Spyro's Adventure, there is however also a version of the game sold without a portal.
The portal included with the Starter Pack for Giants has a slightly different appearance to the old one; the base of the portal (previously green) now glows the same colour as the top but the runes on the side no longer glow at all. All console portals were wired this time to combat the issues with battery consumption that plagued the first game.
The new large "Giants" are sized so that you can still fit two of them onto the portal at the same time for co-op play.
The Portals (both new and old) also power the brand new LightCore features of certain special Skylanders. When brought near the Portal of Power they start glowing! All of the Giant Skylanders contain this LightCore feature but only a select few of the normal sized Skylanders have a LightCore variant. Those that have an additional LightCore edition are Jet-Vac, Pop Fizz, Chill, Shroomboom, Drobot, Hex, Eruptor, and Prism Break. The LightCore versions of these characters cost slightly more than the regular versions (and the ones in the Starter Pack are not the LightCore versions).
Platforms
The game was released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. There was not a PC/Mac version this time.
Music
The theme music was again by Academy Award Winning film composer Hans Zimmer and is a brand new score by returning composer, Lorne Balfe.
Exclusives
Toys R Us again had several Skylanders exclusives, including a Legendary Triple Pack containing Legendary Ignitor, Legendary Slam Bam and Legendary Jet-Vac. At launch they also had a single of the giant Legendary Bouncer.
Target in the US had a special darker version of Crusher, "Granite Crusher", as an exclusive.
At launch GameStop had an exclusive Golden version of the "Dragonfire Cannon Battle Pack", a normal version was also available elsewhere at launch.
GAME/Gamestation in the UK and Walmart in the US had an exclusive Glow in the Dark variant of the Series 2 Cynder and a Glow in the Dark Portal of Power in their console Starter Packs.

Prologue
Around the great portal of power ,in LegendaryFlame's computer room, stood Spyro the great purple dragon. The leader of the Skylanders. Around him stood his fellow Skylanders. They were talking about halloween! "So what should we do for halloween," Asked Camo the little green Leaf dragon "So far we have done a treasure hunt in Creepy Citadel and trick or treat party." "We could have skeleton party!" Shouted Chop chop. He was a skeleton his self so he must have wanted that! "No Chop chop we cant! Not all of us are skeletons!" Said Spyro. "Well we could look for sweets! And have a big party! Hey who wants to help me?" Asked Triggerhappy and funny little orange monster with gold guns. "I do!" shouted Wreckingball and Zap. And off went the three Skylanders.
Chapter 1 Pumpkin sweets and Eyeball treats!
They had walked a while untill finally they were at the giant sofa in the living room. Luckily the family were in the other TV room so they were safe. Or so they thought. "Hey look chocolate!" Shouted Triggerhappy while bouncing around under the sofa. "Wait how will we get there?" Asked Triggerhappy. "I know!" Said Wreckingball, "grab onto me!" So Zap and Triggerhappy grabbed onto Wreckingball and swoosh! Out came Wreckingballs gigantic tounge which stuck to the sofa and off flew Zap, Triggerhappy and Wreckingball! They landed with a smash onto the sofa and once they looked up they found... the first part to there party! They looked so delicious each Skylander had to try one! Trigger happy just smushed it into his face, Wreckingballs was licking it so he could get all the chocolaty goodness and Zap was knawing on one! They really need to bring these to the party!
Just as they had jumped down they saw something moveing in the shadows... it was red, black and yellow with eight legs! But then it came out of the hideing place and it was a giant red spider! They had never seen a red spider befor! But anyway they saw it as dangerous and the Skylanders ran to another chair with the horrible thing chasing them! They finally got to the other chair and Wreckingball's tounge grabbed onto the chair and again swoosh went the Skylanders! Luckily the Spider could not be bothered to climb any futher but it was there.. The Skylanders were STUCK! They needed help!
Chapter 2 Chocolate Eye Kitchen!
"Allright who's gonna come with me to the kitchen?" Asked Spyro. They were going on another adventure to get the chocolate eye. They saw LegendayFlames have a packet of them so they knew that she had some. "I'll come," Said Cynder "Because I am your adventure team mate!" "I'll come aswell!" Said Flameslinger and off they went. Spyro and Cynder were flying carrying Flameslinger since he cant fly! They did not notice Triggerhappy shooting gold coins into the air and Zap shooting lightining bolts up aswell trying to shout "help us!!" They finally got to the kitchen and landed on the table. "Well looks like nothing wants to KILL us sooo we are safe!" Said Spyro. "I wouldn't be so sure of that Spyro! Me and you have been on too many adventures to know when danger is around!"Whispered Cynder. "Well come on anyway!" Replyed Spyro. And off they flew to chocolate eyeballs. They finally flew accross the massive gap and there they were! The chocolate eyeballs! Cynder dived in and pulled out the nearest eyeball. It was as big as her and had a yellow eyris. She pushed it along to Spyro and Flameslinger. "Woah thats massive!" Gasped Flameslinger "How does that girl eat them things? "Dont be so silly!" Laughed Cynder "She is BIG enough to eat them! We are like baby chompies to her!" "Ahh I see now!" Replyed Flameslinger and the Skylanders flew down carrying the eye. It was too heavy so the poor Skylanders had to push it!
Chapter 3 Battle of the Red Spider!
Warnado, Ignitor and Sunburn had been walking along trying to find the perfect party spot when they noticed the Red Spider and the lost Skylanders up the top of the sofa with the chocolates. "Help us!" Shouted Triggerhappy down to them "That spider wants to eat us for dinner!" "Dont worry we will help!" Replyed Warnado. The Skylanders ran into battle charging at the Red Spider! It turned around and blew fire at them! "WOAH!" Cryed Ignitor! "A fire Spider in the human world? Amazing!" "No time for that Ignitor we need to save the three Skylanders!" Shouted Sunburn who was teleporting trying to dodge the Fire Spider! Ignitor was slashing at the spider with his sword while Warnado was spinning around it trying to confuse it and finally Sunburn teleported onto it! "I think its dead!" Said Warnado chearfully. "Uhh no not yet!" Cryed Sunburn as it rose up again! The spider jumped and landed on Warnado pinning him down with its massive legs! "Help!" Shouted Warnado, "its got meee!!" As soon as he said that the two other Skylanders charged right into the horrible spider and Sunburn was on fire hiself! Finally the spider fell down, not dead but unconsuious. Sunburn dragged the Spider away while Ignitor and Warnado helped the three lost Skylanders down. "Thankyou so much you guys!" Said Zap thankfully! "We would have been deadmeat without you!" Replied Wreckingball bouncing up and down. "Mmm those Chocolates look so nice!" Said Warnado with his mouth watering. "Hey look this will be a great spot for the party!" Said Ignitor while pointing to two dragon statues, "Lets use that!"
Chapter 4 The return
"Hey guys we got the chocolate eye! And woah it looks awesome! You have the elements as tables and everything like that!" Said Spyro, "Hey I'm gonna get the other Skylanders while you set this up! "Okay see ya Spyro!" Shouted Triggerhappy as Spyro flew into the distance with the sparkles from his wings leaving a beautiful trail of purple. Spyro had finally reached the Skylanders and stood on the portal. "Skylanders our quest is over and we can now go have our PARTY!" Shouted Spyro to his Skylander friends. All the skylanders cheered and jumped with joy and then followed Spyro to the party! Just as he had hoped for the party was set! All the Skylanders went up to get some chocolates that Triggerhappy, Zap and Wreckinball had found and then after wards they cut the Chocolate eye and everyone had a piece of it! It was perfect and at the end they had a big disco with Halloween music playing and some of the undead Skylanders, including Cynder, played around scaring some of the Skylanders! Even the Fire Spider joined in! It truly was the best Skylanders halloween!
Epilogue
After the party the Skylanders went home to the computer room. They had tidy up or else the humans would think "Who has been in my house?" It was hard for some Skylanders to go to sleep because it was so fun for them! But they did in the end. Some Skylanders put there head down and instantly went to sleep. Some Skylanders were still eating and telling scary storys! Some were by there self reading or well... sleeping!
It sure was a fun night for the Skylanders!
