Does fashion really matter at all? I just give them whatever has the highest amount of power, speed, and such.

And like you mentioned the Umbrella Hat, it's kind of silly to put it on a lot of Skylanders, don't you think?

Well, it's doesn't seem right when you put a Santa hat (rewards most armor) on almost every Skylander, but O.K. smilie

If your Skylanders' armor is low, why not have him/her wear a hat to increase it? I placed an umbrella hat on smilie smilie. Sometimes I place a winged helmet on the slowest ones and a pirate hat on those with the lowest critical hit.

1. Fright Rider is OK. Like most of the new characters in Giants, his armor is very poor and he dies quite easily. His jousting charge, when you begin is not very fast, but I'm not sure HOW much it improves if you go down the Joust Jockey path. His damage output is increased greatly via the Sir Lance a Lot path. Overall, Fright Rider is great for battling hordes of small enemies like Chompies. However, when against large enimies like Jawbreakers and Arkeyans, stick to stronger, more protected Skylanders like Slam Bam, Ignitor, or some of the Giants.
2. How did you post that picture of Fright (the bird)?

@TheShadowDragon Let's just hope Wave 5 comes out BEFORE Skylanders Universe is gone. If you don't play Skylanders Universe, then ignore this. Those who do, witness the horror here:

I just saw the Happy Meal toys for Skylanders, they're definitely a bunch of knock offs.
