Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer

Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer, or as it's also known, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, was the second Spyro game to appear. And as with Spyro the Dragon, this was a PlayStation exclusive.

This second game in the original trilogy, takes Spyro from his home in the Dragon Realms, to a distant unknown land of Avalar. Here Spyro meets plenty of new friends as well as some enemies too. He also learns some brand new moves to boot.

The Story

Here's the official word on the story from the SpyrotheDragon.com website:

Spyro decided to take a holiday to Dragon Shores. He invited his best friend Sparx to join him and together the duo soared through a magic gateway, off for a well-earned vacation. They were going to rest up from their victory over Gnasty Gnorc in their first adventure. But fate was about to throw a wrench in their travel plans.

Far away, the bitter and twisted Ripto, a dinosaur-riding troublemaker, along with his henchmen Crush and Gulp, had taken control of the beautiful land of Avalar. Ripto was a classic example of the "Napoleon Complex" - a little guy who felt he must take on the world - frustrated, short tempered and spiteful. Having stolen a magic sceptre, he was using his new-found power to pick on everyone and generally spoil the peace and quiet of Avalar. He was making life miserable with his magical spells...

The Controls

All controls are the same whatever level you are in, and here they all are:

The gems have changed a little from the previous game. They are now more shaped then before and one has been changed colour completely.

Gem ColourGem Value
Red1
Green2
Purple5
Yellow10
Pink25

They also now come in different containers. Flamable Baskets, Chargeable Vases, Exploding Vases, Unbreakable Chests, Headbash Chests and just lying about on the floor. You will no longer get gems from killing things as they will only release Spirit Particles now.

Gameplay Basics

Here are a few things that you should know before playing this game:

  • You are in a different world than in Spyro the Dragon, and as such, all the creatures you will meet are new
  • When you kill something, no longer will it spew a gem, it will release a spirit particle. This life force can activate a powerup when you reach a certain number of kills in that level
  • No more Dragon freeing, here you collect Talismans and Orbs
  • All butterflies will now be eaten by Sparx, whether or not he's hungry
  • There is now a special blue butterfly which both fully heals Sparx and gives Spyro an extra life
  • You will be set many challenges in the game to earn the Orbs
  • Due to this, the citizens of Avalar are a lot more talkative then anyone in the Dragon Realms

Now it's time to get started with the game:

It's me again, with more boss guides

Crush: Part 1: Crush will work on a blue circle and a forcefield will surround him and he'll jump sending out shockwaves, simply jump over both and while his moving on, try and flame him. Now charge away! As Crush is about to the whack the ground sending down the ceiling, Crush will get Crushed and lose a hitpoint. Repeat.
Part 2: Same as before, only now the weapons are yellow blasts from red platforms.
Part 3: Now there will be a mixture of both attacks and Crush send out three at a time in quick succesion, and when you flame Crush charge away as he'll chase you for ten seconds then smack the ground. Repeat twice more.

Gulp: Part 1: Gulp will run up to you and attempt to squash you, charge to the side to avoid this. Now when the dropped eggs hatch they'll reveal barrels, charge one of these into Gulp and he'll start a shower of electro bombs.
Part 2: Same as before, only now bombs, flame one and charge it into Gulp.
Part 3: Now rockets, pick them up in Spyro's mouth and spit them at Gulp.
Part 4: Now a mixture of all three, and Gulp can eat the weapons himself! Barrel = Shockwave - Jump over, Bomb = hoops - Dodge inbetween, Rocket = Rocket, Charge away from for 10 seconds. Repeat 7 more times!

Ripto: Part 1: Ripto has the attack to throw fireball, dodge them like you did with Crush. Hunter will drop different coloured orbs, If either you or Ripto get three, the last orb's colour will correspond to thier attack: Red - Spyro = Superflame, Ripto = 4 fire shockwaves. Blue - Spyro = Supercharge, Ripto = Harmful Shield. Green - Spyro = 'Supertoxic', Ripto = 3 rounds of hoops. Hit Ripto 9 times.
Part 2: Now Ripto will make a 'SuperGulp' and ride on him. You're attacks stay the same, while SuperGulps are different (SuperGulp is very slow on picking up orbs, but if you get three then Ripto will attempt to attack you): Red = Chasing fire monster, Blue = Electricity Shower, Green = Laser eyes. Hit Gulp 9 times.
Part 3: Gold orbs will appear now and Ripto will turn one into a giant bird, and Spyro will pick one up then the other three will explode the arena, you now have a pernament Superfly+Superflame for the rest of the battle! Dodge under Ripto's attacks and shoot at Ripto or his bird another 9 times and they'll both sink into the lava!

Hmm.. Okay, but as I got this game after Year of the Dragon I'd say it's a rip off, no not a total rip off, not a complete rip off, just a rip off. My hardest level in this game is Fracture Hills, but I'm also thinking that sometime I may think that it would be Skelos Badlands :S. The reason for this is that I've completed Fracture Hills but not Skelos Badlands. Though my reason for Fracture Hills is that the orbs are hard to get, the one for guiding the Archimest or however it's spelt is that you probably have to try it 50 times to get use to the path, the one for helping Hunter being that you have to be quick with the headbashing and have to properly land on the earthshapers and the one for freeing the faun is MEGA HARD because if you crash then you have to start over again. So far I have 59/64 orbs and 9,500 and something/10,000 gems! Last thing: Out of all 8 Spyro games I have I give this the position 3rd

Hooked on the all the Spyro games. Loved this one. They definitely get better with the graphics and loading as they went along.
