Story

Once again Spyro has been reset, so this will not be continuing the storyline found within the The Legend of Spyro trilogy. Here is the premise of the game as told by a press release:

Skylanders Spyro's Adventure lets kids take on the role of a powerful Portal Master, who can control over 30 different characters, including the beloved purple dragon Spyro. Each of these heroes is a protector of an amazing, mysterious world, but they have been ejected from their world by the sinister Portal Master known as Kaos and now they are frozen in our world as toys. Only the players of Skylanders Spyro's Adventure can get them back into their world, by embarking on a fantastical journey where they will explore mythical lands, battle menacing, outlandish creatures, collect treasures, and solve challenging puzzles as a part of the quest to save their world.

Characters

Instead of just playing as Spyro you will have a wide selection of 32 characters to choose from, each of these unique in their own way. The toys themselves store information inside that relates to your ingame character's progress and levelling to make it simple to use on another's system.

Here are all 32 of the characters, some have multiple forms but they only count as one of the 32.

In the United States the individual single pack toys were priced at $7.99 each, and there are also larger packs containing three characters. With the console and PC Starter Packs you get your first three "interaction figures" to start you off; Spyro, Trigger Happy, and Gill Grunt. In the 3DS Starter Pack you instead get Ignitor, Stealth Elf and Dark Spyro, an exclusive character.

As well as the 37 different recognised toys there are also rare variations of some characters. In-game these do not have a different appearance to their normally painted counterparts so other than the toy's coat of paint they are exactly the same. The current confirmed variations are Silver Boomer, Silver Eruptor, Silver Dino-Rang, Gold Drill Sergeant, Gold Flameslinger, and Gold Chop Chop. There are also two even rarer Skylanders that were only made available at retail events; Metalic Purple Cynder and Pearl Hex.

Not all of the characters were released at launch, they have been put out in gradual waves containing new characters and adventure packs every few months, with several still waiting for release.

Elements

The characters of Skylanders will each have one of eight elements, these are shown by the type of base their toy has.

Air Life Undead Earth Fire Water Magic Tech

Air, Life, Undead, Earth, Fire, Water, Magic, Tech

There are some enemies that are weak to certain elements but this is not a widespread feature, the main use in-game for the different elements is to unlock extra parts of each level. The levels are also broken down into sections where a specific element has its Elemental Power bonus active.

During PvP battles you will also find that when fighting a certain element your Skylander's Elemental Power is used. The order of this is as follows: Undead > Life > Water > Fire > Air > Earth > Tech > Magic > Undead

Portal of Power

Portal of Power

To bring your toys into the game you'll need the included Portal of Power, you simply place the toy in the centre of the Portal and instantly the character you've used will appear in-game. This circular device glows different colours and has the ability to recognise two characters placed on it at once to allow for multiplayer co-op or PvP battles.

The Xbox 360 and PC Portals are wired and just plug straight into the console/computer, no batteries required. The PS3 and Wii Portals are wireless and require three AA batteries, they come with a small adaptor that plugs into a USB port on the console. The 3DS portal is also wireless and is powered by three AAA batteries. Your first set of batteries are included of course.

The only portal that works with the Xbox 360 is the portal that comes with the Xbox 360 and the Xbox 360 portal will only work with the Xbox 360 version of the game (and the web game).

Due to its unique method of infra-red communication with the 3DS, the 3DS portal is the only one that will work with the 3DS game. However the 3DS portal can work with the PS3, Wii and PC versions of the game, simply connect it to your system using the included USB cable. This cable also allows you to use your 3DS portal with the web game. Despite its smaller size, when connected to a console it functions exactly like the larger portals in regards to the number of Skylanders and Magic Items it can read at the same time.

Trading Cards

As well as the physical plastic toy you receive a trading card with a picture of the Skylander and some stats. The stats on these cards do not appear to have any relation to their in-game stats. There are no official rules for games using the cards.

Adventure Packs

As well as all of the different characters you can supplement the game with the four Adventure Packs. These contain a Skylander that is unique to the pack, two small Magic Item toys that will help during your game, and a larger Adventure Item that unlocks a brand new level in the game for you to complete.

Platforms

The game appeared on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC, and 3DS as well as on the web with Skylanders: Spyro's Universe. There is also a mobile version that has yet to be released.

It's already happened. No use complaining about it now.

but they couldve kept all of the characters and made a new premise to the game besides changing the design of spyro and not have any of the characters any more.

Spyro's design would seem out of place if that happened. Not to mention he's in a different universe and setting than the original Spyro setting.

couldn't they have started a new series from the design of a heros tail or enter the dragonfly?

I know how its a spin-off, its set for a different age group, and its a reboot, but why did they need to make a totally different series? i know they finished Dotd and they had to find some way to continue Spyro, but i just dont like how they changed it so much. smilie

@dragonwings The question is, though, what series? LoS was finished, and it didn't sell well. And old Spyro is long gone, and any attempts to fully duplicate it would get harsh feedback, with the developers being called rip-offs of Insominac. Fans would never make up their mind.

And a reboot is suppose to clean the slate entirely clean, which also explains how we went from an "epic" trilogy to Skylanders.

Also, the Spyro franchise was always aimed for kids. LoS could be considered an exception, but at the same time it's only aiming for a slightly older age group, which isn't far off from the original games' demographic.

It's confirmed to be a spin-off Spyro game, dragonwings.

This really can't be an awful game, but maybe compared to the other Spyro games we've playing, for sure it will probably stink... Sony had a cute purple dragon to kick off a new game, and now, Toys for Bob (whatever they're called) is changing it all by making Spyro a mutant looking creature - no offense to anyone who disagrees.

But this game shouldn't even count as a Spyro game. It's perfect for just as kid game, but when it becoms a Spyro game, no sense is made. From having an epic series to a kiddie game that involves toys doesn't make sense to me... Cynder, Sparx, and the other characters are not even seen in this game. They are cleaning the slate too much and should've just kept it the way it was and continue the series of Spyro, the way the majority of Spyro fans would've liked it. smilie

@Cynder_fan Do me a favor and take another look at Freedom of Speech.

Yes, you have the right to your opinion and say what you want. But me and Aura also have the right to object and criticize your opinion. It's all under Freedom of Speech. If you're going to mention one half of it, you must mention the other half. And the other half clearly states that Aura can criticize you or anyone else if she wants to.

And no, you cannot fully hate a game when you have not played it. I learned that lesson the hard way.

@FinalBlast No offense, but Activision will not listen to you. They did that last time, and we got DotD; a game that a lot of Spyro fans hate with a burning passion. Because of that, they learned not to listen to the fans.

@Cynder_fan
Skylanders IS a spin-off game. Not to mention, a reboot as well. You can't expect Spyro to look the same after a reboot, yet some fans don't know the qualities of game franchise going through change. And we have heard all the negativity posted on here a thousand times before on this game from fans who hate the game, and it's annoying.

@FinalBlast AGREED ENTIRELY.

@ Aura2: to me, you seem to critisize everyone who aposes the game. I mean, a person has the right to hate it, even if it hasn't been released. I mean, I read somwhere that the TLoS series would continue, so I'm upset they scrapped that idea. Maybe TLoS ended, but there's a lot to expand on.

Secondly, Spyro's design to me looks hideous compared to the cuteish looks he had in all previous games. And the toys are bound to go missing at one stage or another, so you can lose one and then not be able to play anymore. It's an apealing design to kids, but to me it's extra hardware I don't need a toy collecting addiction to gain. If I didn't collect YuGiOh or Pokemon cards which are far cheaper, there's no hope of me going out and paying for a new character. Plus what if the "portal" breaks, goes missing? Once again, you're screwed.

I'm not holding my breathe for something good, I'm beliving it's just a tie-in, as there's no plot centered around Spyro, and Skylanders clearly overshadows the tie-in idea. I don't doubt some people will like it, I'm just dissapointed at it all really.

Spyro is fugly. The toys are a money scam. Gameplay looks like Season of Ice/Season of Flame, so people who liked those games will most likely like this. Collecting rings is cramping Sonic's style. It will probably be something like Super Smash Bros. fused with Spyro Orange. I don't think it's a third series, despite the re-boot. I pray it's just a spinoff title. I'm certainly not going to buy it and maybe Activision will get the message that I prefer Classic and TLoS. I'm not trolling on the game, it looks alright. That is all.
