Story
The story and background for the new types of toys is as detailed below:
In Skylanders Trap Team, Kaos continues his ongoing quest to rule over Skylands. He has discovered the location of the legendary Cloudcracker Prison -- a fortress built entirely out of the magical substance Traptanium and home to Skylands' most nefarious baddies. In an attempt to build his own army of foes, Kaos blows up the prison, releasing the most wanted villains and blasting shards of Traptanium to Earth in the form of Traps. Now it's up to Portal Masters to recapture all of the escaped villains using powerful Traptanium Traps and defeat Kaos before it's too late!
Characters
All pre-existing figures work with Trap Team but of course there is a whole slew of new toys to collect. First to note are the 18 new Trap Masters, Trap Masters are a larger Skylander toy that wields a translucent "Traptanium" weapon and has an advantage when fighting the capturable villains. There are also 18 new core Skylanders who will join the fight, new mini versions of old characters as well as several reposed fan-favourites from previous adventures.
Here are pictures of all of the so far revealed brand new Skylanders:

To help differentiate between the old and new sets, the base of the Skylanders for Skylanders Trap Team is coloured red instead of the green/orange/blue currently seen on the Spyro's Adventure, Giants and SWAP Force toys.
Traps
Another new toy added with Trap Team is the Trap. These translucent crystals are made of Traptanium and are essential for capturing the various villains. Each Trap is a specific element and allows you to capture villains that match that element.

Comments

I was also thinking that maybe Gill Grunt's GF might be the other core Water Skyander.
I've seen her mentioned in stories and things, but she's not appeared as yet and a Mermaid would make a great Skylander.

An amazon warrior with a spear.
Has anyone else noticed the resemblence between Spy Rise and Krankcase?

For Lob Star, i think "I came, I claw!" Might be better. For Bushwhack, maybe "Nuts to you!"
My ideas for the ones i dont like is this;
Tread Head: Driving you crazy!
Head Rush: A run for your money!
Deja Vu: You're running out of time!

V
V 84skylanderdude was trolling us with that.

V
v i also said "jk" in the same comment.

And which one of you would have thought that this could be his catchphrase it just sounds real to me

V
V no it is not. That was someone's suggestion, but I think it's going to be ' bad the bone'

Blades "Cut and run"
Tread head "Coverin' my tracks"
Lob star "A Tail like no other!"
Head rush "Ewe are going down"
Bushwhack "Gotta come and leaf"
Deja Vu "Before your eyes"
Blastermind "I'm gonna give you a piece of my mind"
Fist bump "fist come, fist serve"
High five "Take to the sky"
Bat spin "Right off the bat"
Flip wreck "I'm one stern dolphin"
Funny bone "I've got guts"
p.s. @Deja Vu, Funny Bone's catchphrase was never confirmed.

''Then one day, he received a tip from none other than Master Eon, which led him to a hidden lair near Mt. Cloudbreak, where he not only found his long lost father, but also uncovered an evil plot to take control of the magical volcano during the next eruption ceremony. With his father safe, Spy Rise decided to pursue a new career -- as a member of the Skylanders.''
Is there a part of the backstory I'm missing?
Technically, there is a part that I'm missing...but not anything mentioning his dad being Krankcase.
