Story
The story and background for the new types of toys is as detailed below:
In Skylanders Trap Team, Kaos continues his ongoing quest to rule over Skylands. He has discovered the location of the legendary Cloudcracker Prison -- a fortress built entirely out of the magical substance Traptanium and home to Skylands' most nefarious baddies. In an attempt to build his own army of foes, Kaos blows up the prison, releasing the most wanted villains and blasting shards of Traptanium to Earth in the form of Traps. Now it's up to Portal Masters to recapture all of the escaped villains using powerful Traptanium Traps and defeat Kaos before it's too late!
Characters
All pre-existing figures work with Trap Team but of course there is a whole slew of new toys to collect. First to note are the 18 new Trap Masters, Trap Masters are a larger Skylander toy that wields a translucent "Traptanium" weapon and has an advantage when fighting the capturable villains. There are also 18 new core Skylanders who will join the fight, new mini versions of old characters as well as several reposed fan-favourites from previous adventures.

To help differentiate between the old and new sets, the base of the Skylanders for Skylanders Trap Team is coloured red instead of the green/orange/blue currently seen on the Spyro's Adventure, Giants and SWAP Force toys.
Traps
Another new toy added with Trap Team is the Trap. These translucent crystals are made of Traptanium and are essential for capturing the various villains. Each Trap is a specific element and allows you to capture villains that match that element.

The newly redesigned Traptanium Portal of Power features a slot for the Traps and a speaker for the trapped enemies to speak through.
Platforms
Skylanders Trap Team launched in October 2014 with Toys for Bob handling the game on PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii, Beenox on the Wii U, PS4, Xbox One and 3DS versions, and Vicarious Visions making the tablet editions.

I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do.
I'm assuming the Chompy and Bone Chompy are going to be larger than normal because if they were normal miniature ones, there wouldn't be much point in having them as trappable villains imo.

The Element Squad was formed before Eon even existed. They were a group of creatures from all around Skylands that teamed up to help fight back evil. But one day, they fought a villain too powerful to overcome; Count Doomviper. He almost managed to destroy them, but they lived on. However, they became weak and needed to carry around magic artifacts to be able to function. When Doomviper came back to destroy them, he fired a magic blast, which overloaded the artifacts and sent the Element Squad to Earth. Now, you have found them! Eon has re-classified them from their ancient Elements to the new Elements. You can use the artifacts to change their element and give them new powers. You must place the Elemental Switchers on the Re-Energizing Portal to send them back to Skylands and defeat Count Doomviper, for he has returned!
There are special areas in the game that correspond to certain Sub-Elements the Elemental Switchers have, and can only be entered if the Switcher you're playing as has that Sub-Element. There are 2 Switchers per Sub-Element. The Sub-Elements are Diamond, Electricity, Gas, Glass, Ice, Light, Shadow, Smoke, Sound, Time, Toxic, and Wood.
There are 24 Elemental Switchers, 24 Cores, 24 Revamps, 8 Lightcores, 8 Minis, and 8 Magical Artifacts.
In addition to the Sub-Element Zones, there are magical gates that are too small for the Giants, repel Traptanium, and repel the magic of the SWAP Force as well as that of the Elemental Switchers. The Minis cannot enter either. In short, only Cores can pass through. This gives them special.
There are also small holes or cracks in certain places that only Minis can get through.
There are also once again Giant-accessible areas, SWAP Zones, and clusters of Traptanium. And, of course, elemental gates, as well as dual-elemental gates.

They should remake the first game... But that all the new Skylanders can come and jumping and such...
