Story
The story and background for the new types of toys is as detailed below:
In Skylanders Trap Team, Kaos continues his ongoing quest to rule over Skylands. He has discovered the location of the legendary Cloudcracker Prison -- a fortress built entirely out of the magical substance Traptanium and home to Skylands' most nefarious baddies. In an attempt to build his own army of foes, Kaos blows up the prison, releasing the most wanted villains and blasting shards of Traptanium to Earth in the form of Traps. Now it's up to Portal Masters to recapture all of the escaped villains using powerful Traptanium Traps and defeat Kaos before it's too late!
Characters
All pre-existing figures work with Trap Team but of course there is a whole slew of new toys to collect. First to note are the 18 new Trap Masters, Trap Masters are a larger Skylander toy that wields a translucent "Traptanium" weapon and has an advantage when fighting the capturable villains. There are also 18 new core Skylanders who will join the fight, new mini versions of old characters as well as several reposed fan-favourites from previous adventures.
Here are pictures of all of the so far revealed brand new Skylanders:

To help differentiate between the old and new sets, the base of the Skylanders for Skylanders Trap Team is coloured red instead of the green/orange/blue currently seen on the Spyro's Adventure, Giants and SWAP Force toys.
Traps
Another new toy added with Trap Team is the Trap. These translucent crystals are made of Traptanium and are essential for capturing the various villains. Each Trap is a specific element and allows you to capture villains that match that element.

Comments
On topic: I wonder when Light and Dark will be officially revealed. Hopefully soon.
Agreed.
on topic fling kong
happy birthday to me.....
On topic when is the skylanders annyiveriery?
SSA;
XP: Play the last level until you're level 10.
Gold: Treasure Chest item in The Ruins. Keep resetting until it appears near an NPC and then talk to the NPC to keep resetting the chest in that same spot.
(I don't think I used any tricks in SG. )
SSF;
XP: Play the arena "Angry Angry Plants" on Nightmare Mode and just keep defeating the Chompies. Try not to destroy the Chompy Pods or Greebles. Once the Pods stop spitting out the Chompies, destroy the Pods and Greebles. Then restart it, don't continue to round 2.
Gold: Use the Sky Diamond item on the Training Dummies in Woodburrow.
STT;
XP: Play the last stage in Kaos's Doom Challenge on Easy Mode and have a villain in there too. I suggest . Try to collect the XP before the round ends, otherwise you'll end up not getting as much as you would. Try to get it as soon as it drops, because when another big Enemy is defeated, the other XP disappears.
Gold: Use Chomp Chest in Chapter 1. There's buried gold right in front of Buzz when you enter the chapter. After theta, move forward a bit and jump up onto the next platform. There's buried gold amidst some flowers. Proceed further and jump onto the next platform. There's some more buried gold amidst some grass clusters by the spring-loaded soda cannon. If you have every Winged Sapphire in the game, you can max out a Skylander's upgrades by doing this three times, with the exception of Wow-Pow upgrades. (Perhaps when Sunscraper Spire and Midnight Museum come out, you can even get the Wow-Pow upgrades with three times.)
In giants, I didn't find a good way so I just went to the second to last level to get enough xp and cash. Then for swap force I just went to the arena and did the very last challenge. That was great for xp and I used the sky diamond to beat up test dummies to get so much cash. And now for skylanders trap team, I just go to the very last kaos doom challenge, I use Wolfgang for the weaker skylanders because he's a boss, and if you have enough towers, then you will get so much cash in the end
If you want to level them up on different games, i'd recommend the Dragon Treasure Chest and the Sky Diamond, those should help you out.
When you use the Dragon Treasure Chest in SSA all you have to do is speak to one of the characters at the ruins and it will reset itself.
That's how i levelled all of mine in the first game
