Story

Once again Spyro has been reset, so this will not be continuing the storyline found within the The Legend of Spyro trilogy. Here is the premise of the game as told by a press release:

Skylanders Spyro's Adventure lets kids take on the role of a powerful Portal Master, who can control over 30 different characters, including the beloved purple dragon Spyro. Each of these heroes is a protector of an amazing, mysterious world, but they have been ejected from their world by the sinister Portal Master known as Kaos and now they are frozen in our world as toys. Only the players of Skylanders Spyro's Adventure can get them back into their world, by embarking on a fantastical journey where they will explore mythical lands, battle menacing, outlandish creatures, collect treasures, and solve challenging puzzles as a part of the quest to save their world.

Characters

Instead of just playing as Spyro you will have a wide selection of 32 characters to choose from, each of these unique in their own way. The toys themselves store information inside that relates to your ingame character's progress and levelling to make it simple to use on another's system.

Here are all 32 of the characters, some have multiple forms but they only count as one of the 32.

In the United States the individual single pack toys were priced at $7.99 each, and there are also larger packs containing three characters. With the console and PC Starter Packs you get your first three "interaction figures" to start you off; Spyro, Trigger Happy, and Gill Grunt. In the 3DS Starter Pack you instead get Ignitor, Stealth Elf and Dark Spyro, an exclusive character.

As well as the 37 different recognised toys there are also rare variations of some characters. In-game these do not have a different appearance to their normally painted counterparts so other than the toy's coat of paint they are exactly the same. The current confirmed variations are Silver Boomer, Silver Eruptor, Silver Dino-Rang, Gold Drill Sergeant, Gold Flameslinger, and Gold Chop Chop. There are also two even rarer Skylanders that were only made available at retail events; Metalic Purple Cynder and Pearl Hex.

Not all of the characters were released at launch, they have been put out in gradual waves containing new characters and adventure packs every few months, with several still waiting for release.

Elements

The characters of Skylanders will each have one of eight elements, these are shown by the type of base their toy has.

Air Life Undead Earth Fire Water Magic Tech

Air, Life, Undead, Earth, Fire, Water, Magic, Tech

There are some enemies that are weak to certain elements but this is not a widespread feature, the main use in-game for the different elements is to unlock extra parts of each level. The levels are also broken down into sections where a specific element has its Elemental Power bonus active.

During PvP battles you will also find that when fighting a certain element your Skylander's Elemental Power is used. The order of this is as follows: Undead > Life > Water > Fire > Air > Earth > Tech > Magic > Undead

Portal of Power

Portal of Power

To bring your toys into the game you'll need the included Portal of Power, you simply place the toy in the centre of the Portal and instantly the character you've used will appear in-game. This circular device glows different colours and has the ability to recognise two characters placed on it at once to allow for multiplayer co-op or PvP battles.

The Xbox 360 and PC Portals are wired and just plug straight into the console/computer, no batteries required. The PS3 and Wii Portals are wireless and require three AA batteries, they come with a small adaptor that plugs into a USB port on the console. The 3DS portal is also wireless and is powered by three AAA batteries. Your first set of batteries are included of course.

The only portal that works with the Xbox 360 is the portal that comes with the Xbox 360 and the Xbox 360 portal will only work with the Xbox 360 version of the game (and the web game).

Due to its unique method of infra-red communication with the 3DS, the 3DS portal is the only one that will work with the 3DS game. However the 3DS portal can work with the PS3, Wii and PC versions of the game, simply connect it to your system using the included USB cable. This cable also allows you to use your 3DS portal with the web game. Despite its smaller size, when connected to a console it functions exactly like the larger portals in regards to the number of Skylanders and Magic Items it can read at the same time.

Trading Cards

As well as the physical plastic toy you receive a trading card with a picture of the Skylander and some stats. The stats on these cards do not appear to have any relation to their in-game stats. There are no official rules for games using the cards.

Adventure Packs

As well as all of the different characters you can supplement the game with the four Adventure Packs. These contain a Skylander that is unique to the pack, two small Magic Item toys that will help during your game, and a larger Adventure Item that unlocks a brand new level in the game for you to complete.

Platforms

The game appeared on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC, and 3DS as well as on the web with Skylanders: Spyro's Universe. There is also a mobile version that has yet to be released.

Sorry, I just wanted to rage a little in my own language smilie

Now, I think you should give up, seriously. Why complain about Activision? It was they who made **************the games from the beginning, if you have not thought about it. And why would Activision continue making Spyro games if it weren't for the fans? What are you thinking with anyway?!?! Activision makes this game for us not for themselves!

That's what I thought. Still, spending about 150 dollars is better than spending 400 dollars.

Spyro_LUVA, you need at least 8 toys to beat the game 100%. One character of each element. The elements unlock areas, like in any other Spyro game that has them. E.g, use Fire element to burn vines.

#609 NEW_SpyroLUVA 18:21:06 24/04/2011
The game can be beaten with any one of the toys, and only one of the toys if you so choose. It's also been said that each element unlocks new content, so even if you are the type who is not fully satisfied without 100% completion, it is still possible for you to get total completion with just one toy from each element. This isn't so bad because the 70 dollar game already comes with three toys, each of a differnet element. Also ,when you consider each toy is less than 10 dollars and that a standard game is 60 dollars, a 70 dollar price tag is not so bad given that it comes with 3 toys, cards, the game, and the Portal of Power.

I'm also weary about spending 70 bucks (or whatever the price is going to be on other platforms) because of how long it'll take to beat the came. I understand quality vs. quantity, but in a game like this, I appreciate replay value, and, again, if the replay value lies in buying more of those figures, I just don't know if I want to shell out the money period for this game. Assuming I play the whole game as Spyro, it seems like a game aimed at 6-12 year olds will take five hours, tops, to beat. I remember when a Spyro game could span for more than 40 hours, but since a lot of the production value in a game revolves around graphics, they can't make games as long as they were on systems like the N64 and PS1.

My problem with this game isn't necessarily the Spyro design, which looks cute from the drawing, but terrible rendered 3-D. At least the Spyro in the Legend of Spyro trilogy still looked like Spyro--just a graphically better one. My problem with the games lies in the fact that 100% completion of this games seems contingent upon spending over 400 dollars to buy all 32 figures. Now I don't know if this is the case, but the press release makes it seem like the case. I enjoy trying to get 100% in any game like this, but I am not spending over 400 dollars just to do that, which makes me lose respect for Activision even more (not that I already didn't lose it due to their constant rape with CoD and the Guitar Hero franchise).

Oh, and if I'm in denial of this 'evidence' as you call it, aren't you as well given that you said Activision has changed? After all, evidence = truth, and if you call articles about Activision being bad evidence/truth, that means that you agree with what the articles say, which means that no, actually, you haven't really changed your opinion of Activision, and you're just a shallow hypocrite because you say they've changed just because they seem to have made a Spyro game that you don't hate.
Or you really do think they've changed, in which case you can agree that the articles are not evidence/truth , and thus no, I am not in denial, but yes, you are.
Hee hee, I hope you had as much fun reading that as I had writing it.

Hang on, you still called the articles about how bad activision is evidence. That to me says you still see a bit of truth in it, yet you suddenly like them JUST because of one potentially good Spyro game? Shallow but whatever... Also, good as the game may be, it's clear the toys thing is a money grab. If they wanted JUST to make a good game, they'd have the characters as unlockables, or DLC since without actual toys they'd be cheaper. Not saying I dislike Skylanders coz I don't, but I still see the fact of the toys. And I don't see how you can still be in denial of the fact that ALL companies are motivated largely by money.

#604 Aura24 19:02:54 23/04/2011
The evidence was true, SpyroLUVA. I don't see how you can be in denial about it, especially when the evidence was in front of you the whole entire time.

And I thought Activision would make a ridiculous idea of making a Spyro game their way, but when I saw Skylanders and how much effort and hard work they're making for the younger audience and for fans who still love Spyro, my view of Activision changed a bit.

#603 NEW_SpyroLUVA 18:54:08 23/04/2011
I don't recall asking for an e mail.
But I told ya before, I don't judge people till I meet em.
Anyway, seems a bit shallow don't ya think? First you hate them for all this so called evidence of being money driven, but as soon as they make what looks like a decent Spyro game you love em.
And it IS a way to get more money, even a fan can see that; that's the main drive of all big companies.
avatar
#602 Aura24 18:16:46 23/04/2011
@SpyroLUVA
You indeed defended the Activision CEO like a fangirl, when you wanted to get his email to contact him to see if his money-driven ways on the gaming industry were true, when the evidence was obviously in front of you the whole time back then.
